Dr. Patel

Dr. Patel is a board certified, fellowship trained vitreoretinal specialist. He specializes in the medical evaluation and treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, and other vitreoretinal disorders. He is highly skilled in the latest surgical treatments of macular pucker, macular hole, floaters, retinal detachments, vitreous hemorrhage, and secondary lens fixation, among other procedures. As a third-generation physician, Dr. Patel approaches clinical care as an art, espousing a patient-centric philosophy tailoring the treatment to the needs of each the individual patient and the disease they suffer from.

Dr. Patel grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he graduated as valedictorian of his International Baccalaureate class at St. Petersburg High School. He went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania where he triple-majored in biochemistry, economics, and biophysics, graduating with Summa Cum Laude honors and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Along with his undergraduate degree, Dr. Patel obtained a Master’s degree in Chemistry within his 4 years of study. His master’s thesis was written on original translational research he performed on molecular drug development for gastrointestinal cancers. To pursue his medical studies, Dr. Patel jointly attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard Medical School as part of the Health Science and Technology (HST) program. Dr. Patel was awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Medical (HHMI) medical research fellowship, performing translational research at Dana Farber Cancer Institute with a focus on development of new chemotherapies. During his clinical rotations, he discovered his passion for surgery, and ophthalmology in particular.

After graduation from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Patel matched at the nationally-ranked Roski Eye Institute at the University of Southern California (USC), where he completed his residency training in Ophthalmology at the Los Angeles County Hospital. Following his residency training, Dr. Patel completed a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Wills Eye Hospital, the nation’s first and top-ranked eye hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During his fellowship, he served on the retina service of Wills Eye Hospital and was a faculty instructor in Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University, where he supervised the next generation of resident physicians in the clinic as well as the operating room.

Dr. Patel has served as a co-investigator on over 20 clinical trials studying the treatment of “dry” and “wet” macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, diabetic macular edema, and retinal detachment repair. He has co-authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications on topics including secondary lens fixation, retinal detachment repair, diabetic macular edema, and “wet” age-related macular degeneration. He has served as a contributor to the diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration sections of the 8th edition of the Wills Eye Manual. He is a member of American Academy of Ophthalmology, Texas Medical Association, Tarrant County Medical Association, and American Society of Retina Specialists.

On a personal note, Dr. Patel enjoys reading science fiction, hiking, cooking Indian food, and most of all, spending time with his wife Tiffany, and oculoplastic surgeon, who he met during their mutual residency training.

Dr. Patel is available for appointments in our Southlake, Fort Worth, Plano and Dallas location.
